***ARES/RACES Comments by Ivan N1OXA Androscoggin EC* The December meeting for ARES/RACES was cancelled by Tim, due to him going to Logan to pick up his son at the airport. But, we had the Quarterly Hospital Radio test on Dec 19, 2012. we had the following hospitals checked in: CMMC and St Mary's from Androscoggin, Franklin Memorial from Franklin, Maine General from Kennebec, and Stephens Memorial from Oxford. Also, Androscoggin and Franklin County EMA's. The net was one hour long, we tried three other Repeaters and had mixed results. Tim did not get a response from Poland School Maint. Director, so we are delaying the Antenna installing to spring of 2013. The other news is that our School to ISS has be changed by NASA to April 2013. This is a better time for us because of better weather. More info will be given as we get near April. I hope all had a great Christmas and hope that you all have a Happy New Year.

Ivan, N1OXA

Secretarys' Report

  The Androscoggin Amateur Radio Club held a meeting Wednesday December 5, 2012 at the Lepage Conference Center in Lewiston Maine. In attendance: n1jd, k1wtx, kg1q, n1dot, w1box, kb1qhr, w1ltx, wa1skp, kb1doi, w1scm and son Charles, n1oxa, n1svb, n1kat, w1lwt and n1nyw.

We showed up early and set up buffet tables and had a Christmas party feast around 6:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order at 7:07 p.m. by President Bill Woodhead. Bob w1ltx made a motion to accept the Secretarys’ report as printed in the Acorn. Motion seconded by Andy kb1doi. Vote: approved.

Ivan gave a Treasurers’ report and said we now have all but 5 of the newsletters sent by computer now. Andy kb1doi made a motion to accept the report. Jerry k1wtx seconded the motion. Vote: approved.

Bill reports that the room rate to stay at the Ramada during the convention will be the same as last year, $ 65 and reservations to get that price should be made directly with the Ramada Inn. There was a quick discussion about the preparation for the hamfest / convention, the paper work to sign up vendors etc. is in the works.

Bill told us that the contact with the International Space Station will probably be held the last weekend of February or the first day of March. A ham from New Hampshire, n1fcc will be supplying most of the equipment for the space station pass. The school would like more visits from hams to explain how ham radio works before they try to communicate with the space station.

Bill also passed on to us that he talked with Bob n1wjo who is working on setting up a technician class in Rumford.

Ivan just got an email from an organization that wants to hold a seven day bike trek from September 7 to the 14th next year that will cover about 70 miles per day and will want hams to help. There was concern that Loon Echo may tie up operators at that time but a check of the w1npp.org web site shows Loon Echo will be September 21 so there is no conflict.

Winter Field Day will be held again this year on the last weekend in January at Lee w1lwts’ house in Lisbon. More information at w1npp.org thanks to David we1u for providing the info.

Bob w1ltx made a motion to adjourn that was seconded by Andy kb1doi. Vote: approved so the meeting was adjourned at 7:23 p.m. to make sure we eat the rest of the food so there will be no evidence any of us were off our diets.

Thank you to Ivan for catching a mistake last month that I have made more than once in recent months, I wrote that Shawn w1sab was at the meetings but the report should have shown that is was really Mark kg1q. It was my error.

Respectfully submitted,

Dick Knight n1nyw Secretary
